On Certainty, Assumption, and Doubt: In Pursuit of Truth

What is certainty, if not the conviction of, what is unseen? The Bible, in Hebrews 11:1, defines faith from the perspective of certainty: “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Similarly, René Descartes, in Meditations on First Philosophy, invites us to consider certainty as a state of mind in which full conviction about the truth or existence of something prevails, leaving no room for doubt. In epistemology, this concept is understood as knowledge or belief that is held unquestionably, even in the absence of concrete empirical evidence.

The way this topic entered my life was through an unexpected gift: a casual phone call that turned into an unforgettable family gathering. This gift—one of the greatest I have ever received from my father—not only strengthened my character but also instilled in my brother and me an insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge. Having a curious and cultured father became the foundation for learning to appreciate and value the search for truth—a process that we both receive and share throughout our lives.

Our engaging conversation began with the classic follow-up questions and soon evolved into a profound discussion about the word “certainty.” This dialogue reminded us of the film Conclave, particularly the scene featuring the initial speech, where the protagonist declares that doubt runs in our veins. This exchange taught us the importance of embracing doubt as a driving force toward finding compelling and profound answers.

The Rationale Behind Doubt

The central reflection is clear: if we harbor doubts, what is the best way to find answers? Many authors advise a simple approach: go directly to the source of the questions. This method is not exclusive to existential or philosophical queries but extends to every aspect of life where we seek to uncover truth.

  Have uncertainties about your beliefs? Research and delve deeper into the foundations of your creed. If you practice Christianity, for example, consult and study the Bible, question, and reflect.

The key lesson is not to let assumptions steal from us the opportunity to discover truth. Truth is a journey that requires perseverance, conviction, and the courage to face the unknown so that we can shape our own conclusions in a world brimming with diverse perspectives. Each individual experience, from the moment we are born, molds our vision and, consequently, our "lens" on reality.

Remaining humble and open to the experiences and realities of others allows us, first and foremost, to more fully understand each concept or idea we have yet to master; and secondly, to grow alongside those who share our desire to listen and discover.
